Stuart Bernstein, Chairman of the Board of The Bernstein Companies, has been a recognized leader in the real estate development, investment, and management business in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States for 35 years. Today, his companies are directly involved in more than 40 individual properties as owner, manager and/or lender. Mr. Bernstein, and his affiliated companies have developed, owned and managed thousands of apartments and condominiums as well as more than two million square feet of office space. In addition, his entities own and manage a number of major hotels, including such well known "flags" as Marriott, Holiday Inn, and Sheraton. Mr. Bernstein also serves as Chairman of Onyx International, LLC, a recently formed merchant banking firm. Onyx is dedicated to uncovering and establishing equity positions in high-potential operating companies that possess unique potential for growth in targeted industries. Throughout his career, Mr. Bernstein has made a strong commitment to participate in civic, educational and governmental activities. He was appointed by the President of the United States to the Board of Trustees of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and serves on many of its committees. Mr. Bernstein also served President George Bush and Vice President Dan Quayle in a number of key capacities in their election campaign. Today, Mr. Bernstein serves as: Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American University in Washington, D.C.; a Board Member of the International Board of Governors of the Weizmann Institute of Science; and as Director of the Greater Washington Regional Board of Crestar Bank. Mr. Bernstein is a native of Washington, D.C., a graduate of the American University, and was honored by its School of Business as its Distinguished Alumni in 1975.
